After much research our family has made it’s first program selection for the summer of 2010. We’ve made our math selections.
Cameron, our High-Schooler-To-Be, should be receiving his Saxon Geometry Homeschooling Kit in just a few days. We chose this curriculum to prepare him for his Freshman year in Honors Geometry at the nearby Jesuit school. Since I finally realized it’s been awhile since I took Geometry, or even used these skills for that matter, we also talked his current math teacher to help us out this summer.
What does Cameron think about that? Surprise, surprise, he is actually very supportive. Excited would probably be an overstatement. Few 14 year-olds would be flipping cartwheels over summer math. But fact is that Cameron would sell his little brother for enrollment in the Jesuit High School (might throw in the sister and the dog too). But that’s an entirely different blog.
Collin, the brother just described, will be doing math online through K12.org.
Collin is my project based learner. He is my kiddo who has to really work for his grades. Thankfully he does. Since he is also very much effected by summer time learning hiatus, I am really thrilled to see how this summer will be different.
Collin checked out several programs before we settled on K12. He is our tech-guy who is very attracted to online learning.
Last, but not least (she’ll make sure of it), we have the youngest–Caley.
Caley is eight. She is in third grade. Much to Collin’s dismay, Caley is breathing down his academic neck by already having completed 4th grade Saxon math. She also choose to do K12 math this summer. She was eying Collin as she announced it across the dinner table. Collin tried really hard to cover his true feelings. As a mother, and fluent in my kid’s non-verbal communications, I translate: No way will my lil’ sis be at the same math level as me. Over my dead body.
Game on.
